Poker Tips By George: Distractions Can Be Costly
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Poker is game of partial information. The more pertinent information we have, the better chance we will win more pots and be able to build them up in size. I have often written about the importance of focusing on the game and paying attention to gain as much information as possible. That gives us a decided “edge” over our less attentive opponents. Mistakes are often made when a player becomes distracted. That can happen whether in live games or when playing poker online.   Analogy: It is like driving your car on the freeway while using your smartphone. Statistics show that will lead to almost 25% more car accidents. Do not let it happen to you. Self-discipline can help you avoid such occurrences. On the other hand, distractions are the enemy. There are more distractions from the game than you might realize; and they happen so often. Let us examine some of the more common ones: Chatting with your neighbors at the table or friends standing behind you as a hand is played. Chatting with the cocktail waitress while the game is underway. Is that more important to you than the game? Engaging in conversation over your cell phone. Meanwhile, the action is at the table. You may miss some obvious tells. A typical hand of poker lasts just about two minutes; think of all you are missing while being distracted. Eating a meal while playing. That may also disturb your opponents and soil the playing cards. Best advice: Take a break from the game during that time. Drinking alcoholic beverages while playing. Your mind needs to be as sharp as possible. That is why poker experts try to be well rested before sitting down at the poker table – and keeping it that way. Reading a book or magazine while the game is underway. Is that more important than what is happening at the poker table? That is not the time to be reading a poker book, even if it teaches you a new skill. Do it at home, or while taking a break to enjoy your dinner. The stock market is important if you are an investor, but the poker table is not the place to get the latest investment news. Watching the big TV mounted on the wall. Just look up from your table. A big basketball game is exciting but it can make it harder for you to make the key decisions so important during the poker game. There is a sudden commotion at a near-by poker table. Someone just won the Bad Beat Poker Jackpot. There is a rush of people to that table. It has been said that “curiosity killed the cat.” That is a common cliché. It is your choice when it happens near your table. Bottom Line: There will always be distractions as you play the game of poker – often many more than you realize, no matter which game you choose. Your best bet is to have the right mindset and use self-discipline to avoid them. Let your opponents make the big mistakes… About George EpsteinAfter a long and productive career as a leader in the aerospace industry, upon his retirement in the 1990s, George Epstein chose poker as his “second career.” George has been widely recognized for his many significant accomplishments and contributions to our society. PSL remains ‘strong,’ in talks with GMA 7 for broadcast deal
By admin | | 0 Comments |

FILE PHOTO – PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico during the 2020 league opening. TRISTAN TAMAYO/INQUIRER.net Despite encountering turbulent times, the Philippine Superliga is in the process of engaging a new television partner in GMA 7. PSL chairman Philip Ella Juico announced Tuesday at the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum that league officials look forward to forging an alliance with the Kapuso network since breaking up with TV5 has become inevitable. “We remain as strong as before and even stronger now because the teams that we have are very committed. As we speak today, we are starting negotiations with GMA 7 as our new TV partner,’’ said Juico. Once the deal has been sealed, GMA 7 will air the league’s beach volleyball tournament starting Feb. 26, featuring eight teams in a bubble tournament in Subic Bay, Zambales. Juico said the PSL currently has four teams—Sta. Lucia, F2 Logistics, Chery Tiggo and a guest squad in Petro Gazz—while the league is seeking to add two to three more teams as soon as the GMA 7 partnership has been finalized. He added Generika, Petron and Marinerang Pilipina took a leave from the league and reports have it that Cignal has decided to move ship to the Philippine Volleyball League. “If Cignal is joining the other league, we have no other sensible reason to stay at TV5. We have to adjust to the reality of the situation and the signs of the times,’’ said Juico during the weekly forum backed by Smart, Go For Gold, Milo, San Miguel Corporation, Braska and Pagcor. But while the PVL has gone professional under the supervision of the Games and Amusements Board, the PSL, which decided to move the projected March opening of its indoor volleyball to a later date, has opted to remain non-professional. “Our board, our team owners, the ones who are still with us really want to stay non-professional. We realized that there is really no room for two professional (volleyball) leagues in this country,’’ said Juico. “What good will that do to Philippine sports development? It doesn’t make strategic sense. Why do we have to move up if there is already a (pro) league there? We’ll just stay here where we are happy and have created a niche,’’ added Juico. Negreanu books a $100k session
By admin | | 0 Comments |

We recap some stories you may have missed including a big comeback for KidPoker and the debate about the 'real' Main Event rages on. KidPoker starts the comeback Do you believe in miracles? Well, not really, but Daniel Negreanu is chipping away at his defecit against Doug Polk.  Since refusing to quit in the challenge he has booked back-to-back winning sessions against Polk and yesterday took down $98,579. It could have been a lot more but Polk managed to claw a big pot back near the end.  He remains $644,668 down but if you adjust for all-in EV he is only seven buy-ins down. 11,250 hands remain for him to win just over 16 buy-ins, can he do it? With another 2.5BI win, @RealKidPoker is only behind 7 buyins in EV now. Aslan Karatsev of Russia Continues an Unlikely Run at Australian Open
By admin | | 0 Comments |

He is the mystery man who few in the sport had heard of just days ago. But Aslan Karatsev of Russia has landed in the semifinals of the Australian Open.In one of the most unlikely runs in the history of modern tennis, Karatsev on Tuesday became one of the few players to make the final four of a Grand Slam after surviving the qualifying tournament when he beat an ailing Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in four sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.Karatsev, 27, who was born in Russia, moved to Israel as a child, then returned to Russia as a teenager to pursue better tennis training, according to The Times of Israel. He had been playing in the tennis hinterlands for several years with little success. He had never qualified for a Grand Slam before this tournament. He won three straight matches at the Australian Open qualifying event in Doha to win a spot in the main event and came in ranked No. 114 in the world. He has never been ranked higher than No. 111.Dimitrov appeared to have the match under control after the first set but suffered what looked to be back spasms in the third set and appeared to be on the edge of retiring for the rest of the match.Just four other players have made the semifinals of a Grand Slam after getting through the qualifying event.Ahead of the Australian Open, he played doubles for Team Russia in the ATP Cup, a team event in which players represent their countries. Russia won the competition, but not because of Karatsev, who lost all three matches in which he played with two different partners. His teammates noticed that he was playing as well as they had ever seen, and yet none of them would have predicted anything like this.“We felt like he could do something amazing,” Daniil Medvedev, Russia’s top player and the No. 4 seed in the Australian Open. “To be honest, being in your first Grand Slam main draw? Making quarters is something exceptional. He’s not over yet.”He certainly is not.Karatsev will take on the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev, which is scheduled for Tuesday night.

Jordan Clarkson drops 40 to lead the Utah Jazz past the Philadelphia 76ers
By admin | | 0 Comments |

When it was all over, Donovan Mitchell sprinted at Jordan Clarkson, a pair of water bottles in his hand, and doused the Utah Jazz’s sixth man. That was as close as anyone came to cooling down Clarkson on Monday night at Vivint Arena. The Jazz guard torched the nets, scoring 40 points to help his team beat the Philadelphia 76ers 134-123. The Sixers were the best team in the East as of Monday night, but they couldn’t handle the West’s best, as the Jazz (23-5) reeled off their eighth win in a row. “The biggest thing for me is them believing in me,” Clarkson said. “Letting me be myself and embracing me just plays a role in who I am. That gives me confidence. Those guys always come over to the bench and tell me to keep shooting, even when I’m having an off night, even when I’m hot. They’re telling me to shoot the ball no matter what.”   CAN'T COOL HIM OFF!#TakeNote pic.twitter.com/Y1IQYm6Pzy — utahjazz (@utahjazz) February 16, 2021   Donovan Mitchell had 24 points. Joe Ingles scored 20. And three Jazzmen finished with 11 points. Philly’s Ben Simmons had 42 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists in the loss.     Even with All-Star center Joel Embiid getting a late scratch because of a back issue, the Sixers jumped out to an early lead in Salt Lake City. Philly led 24-10 midway through the opening quarter. Behind 19 points and five assists from Simmons, the Sixers shot 72.7 percent from the field and scored 22 points in the paint in the period. “At the beginning of the game, he had too much space in transition,” Jazz head coach Quin Snyder said. “Tonight he attacked the rim early. He felt the game. We had to get back and show him more of a crowd and make it harder for him to see a drive, to deter him.” The hot hands of Clarkson and Georges Niang kept Utah within arm’s reach. Clarkson went 4-for-5 from deep in the first quarter while Niang went 2-for-2. “When Jordan came in with the performance he had, we’ve seen that obviously before—but that was another level,” Snyder said. “I thought he kept us in the game.” The Jazz kept clawing their way back. And when Bogdanovic converted a wild and-one bucket midway through the second, the Jazz had their first lead, a 57-55 advantage. Despite shooting just 2-for-11 from deep in the second, the Jazz took a 72-66 lead into the locker room at halftime. Clarkson had 19 at the break. The Jazz’s sixth man stayed hot in the second half. His 13 points in the third helped the Jazz build their first double-digit lead and take a 106-94 advantage into the final quarter. “He’s not bashful and we don’t want him to be,” Snyder said of Clarkson. Simmons kept the Sixers close, leading an 10-0 charge in the opening minutes of the fourth. But Clarkson and the Jazz would not be deterred en route to their 19th win in the last 20 games, answering with big play after big play.     Clarkson scored eight more points in the fourth, finishing just two points shy of his career high. Royce O’Neale crashed into the scorer’s table during a defensive stand and then sank two clutch 3-pointers. Rudy Gobert denied Dwight Howard at the rim on one end and then rocked his own rim on the other. “Philly played great,” Snyder said. “It took us making some big plays at the end of the game.” Monday’s Best 8 made threes ties a career high for JC #PerformanceLeader | @UofUHealth pic.twitter.com/fYlVA3EClj — utahjazz (@utahjazz) February 16, 2021 | JC is the first player to score 40 points off the bench in under 30 minutes since it was done in 1991 (h/t @statmuse) #NBAAllStar | @jordanclarksons pic.twitter.com/46XZUfx0ob — utahjazz (@utahjazz) February 16, 2021 Up Next The Jazz will hit the road for a pair of games against the L.A. Bally’s Atlantic City casino to close for 38 hours
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Between Feb. 16-18, for a technology overhaul B ally’s casino in Atlantic City will temporarily close for 38 hours this week to perform a technology overhaul. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement told The Associated Press on Thursday that the closure will only affect the casino floor, not the associated hotel. It will start at 8 p.m. EST February 16 and end at 10 a.m. February 18. “We are excited to announce that Bally’s Atlantic City Hotel and Casino will be rolling out a new rewards program beginning February 18, 2021,” said Michael Monty, the casino’s assistant general manager. “The new program will provide greater rewards for Bally’s AC’s loyal players and guests, enhancing their overall gaming experience, while maintaining players’ current tier status.” While Bally’s will continue to honor hotel reservations during the closure, “we understand that these conditions are not ideal for our players and guests. As such, customers are welcome to receive a refund on those days, if requested.” Monty said. Bally’s was sold in November for $25 million from Caesars Entertainment to Rhode Island-based Twin River Worldwide Holdings, which subsequently changed its name to Bally’s Corp. The New Jersey Casino Control Commission in November approved the new owners to operate Bally’s after the company pledged to invest in renovations and repairs to what has become Atlantic City’s poorest-performing casino in terms of revenue. The company has said it intends to spend at least $90 million to renovate hotel rooms, upgrade restaurants, entertainment offerings and its pool and spa, and replace or repair critical infrastructure in the 41-year-old facility. .
